Purpose
We are a coalition of organizations who believe housing is a human right, and we seek to empower those residents most deeply impacted by an oppressive housing system.

History and Housing Policy
HJM was formed by Maine organizers shortly after the start of the pandemic in 2020, when the shelter-in-place order left many people without stable housing in an especially vulnerable place.  HJM successfully advocated for an eviction moratorium and rent relief to keep people affordably sheltered in their homes.

Since that time, HJM has continued to advocate throughout Maine for housing policies that promote the needs of people who are marginalized by an oppressive housing system.  We have endorsed fully funding rental assistance, ending landlord discrimination against tenants, creating statewide rent stabilization, mitigating the occurrence of eviction, funding the creation of new green and affordable housing, funding emergency shelters and supportive housing, and ending discriminatory zoning practices.
